District 11: Newton and Novena

Located at the fringe of Singapore’s prime districts 9 and 10, District 11 has increasingly developed into an extension of these exclusive districts to incorporate more luxury private residences to appeal to the same high-end crowd – but with its unique charm.

Situated in the central region of Singapore, District 11 includes:

  • Newton: Home to the popular Newton Food Centre, a popular tourist and local attraction for delectable Singaporean fare and located at the edge of the popular Orchard shopping belt, its convenience to town makes for an attractive neighbourhood.
  • Novena: Home to not one but multiple major hospitals like the KKH Children and Women’s Hospital, malls that cater to young children, and proximity to reputable schools, Novena is a neighbourhood that is perfect for families and medical professionals alike.

Nature and Sports Centres

While there are not many green pockets in the neighbourhood due to the high concentration of medical centres, malls, and private residences, residents can still find respite in some of these dedicated spots.

Zhongshan Park, an open green space located between the Days Hotel, and Zhongshan Mall is a popular haunt for kids to explore and unwind while parents enjoy their alfresco dining in the neighbouring mall.

Other small green spaces include Novena Park, a small green space within a landed estate, with a playground for kids, Goldhill Avenue Playground, Cambridge Park, and Novena Rise Park.

For larger parks, residents only need to head to neighbouring districts like Toa Payoh and Orchard to enjoy parks like Toa Payoh Town Park and the Singapore Botanic Gardens.

For sports lovers, there are plenty of sports centres in the vicinity to choose from. From HomeTeam NS Balestier, which boasts of a swimming pool and gym, the St Wilfred ActiveSG Sports Centre, which has a football pitch and tennis courts, and the Civil Service Club at Tessensohn, which has everything from rock climbing, and bowling to a karate academy.

Heritage Attractions

Fun fact: The medical hub of Novena and the fringe town district of Newton also come with their interesting heritage sites.

Some important landmarks in the district include the Church of St. Alphonsus, a beautiful and charming church next to the station, the Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall, the Sasanaransi Buddhist Temple one of the oldest temples in Singapore, Kuan Im Tng Temple, the Police Heritage Centre, the Lam Yeo Coffee Powder Factory, and many more.

Schools, Libraries, and Other Public Facilities

Although there aren’t any public schools within this district, some of Singapore’s top educational institutions are just a hop, skip, and a throw away in the neighbouring District 10.

These top institutions include Singapore Chinese Girls’ School, St Joseph’s Institution, Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road), and Catholic Junior College. For working families with younger children, the district is full of childcare and student care centres to choose from.

The nearest public libraries are found in neighbouring districts, like the Toa Payoh Public Library.
