Located at the fringe of the downtown core, District 03 is a predominantly residential district with great access to the many exciting developments that the southern region of Singapore has to offer.
Situated in the southern region of Singapore, District 03 includes:
• Alexandra: A tranquil residential neighbourhood best for being home to Queensway Shopping Centre (vintage mall for sporting apparel) and the very first IKEA in Singapore.
• Commonwealth: Part of Queenstown, one of Singapore’s first-ever satellite residential towns, this is a mature residential estate with plenty of public facilities.
• Tiong Bahru: Once considered merely an old residential estate, this neighbour underwent a significant rejuvenation to transform into a popular hipster district.
Parks and Sports Centres
As with most residential estates in Singapore, each neighbourhood comes with at least 1 dedicated park for the residents living in the area.
Within Tiong Bahru, this would be Tiong Bahru Park (a 3.3-hectare urban park) with outdoor exercise equipment, a variety of jogging trails, a playground for kids, and more.
Within Alexandra, this would be the Alexandra Canal Linear Park, which makes for a scenic stroll, cycle, or jog, the Alexandra Hill East Neighbourhood Park, and the Alexandra Park connector.
Within Commonwealth, this would be Commonwealth Park where there’s a fitness area, trails for running, and even a basketball court.
For those keen on other sports, there’s always the Delta Sports Complex which serves the community’s sporting needs with an ActiveSg gym, dance studio, hockey stadium, swimming complex, basketball, and badminton courts.
Heritage Attractions
Apart from having the reputation of being some of Singapore’s earliest HDB estates, the neighbourhoods in District 03 come with their own unique and colourful histories.
For instance, the Alexandra district has a heritage that dates to the early days of World War II. From the Alexandra hospital which once served as a military hospital to the military encampments at Alexandra Barracks, there are plenty of fascinating historic sites in the area.
Tiong Bahru, takes the crown as Singapore’s first-ever public housing estate developed from swamp land, while Commonwealth (as part of Queenstown), was the site of the first full-scale public housing satellite town.
Schools, Libraries, and Other Public Facilities
As with most residential districts, there’s a wide selection of public schools in the vicinity.
This includes Alexandra Primary School, Queenstown Primary School, Zhangde Primary School, Gan Eng Seng Primary School, Crescent Girls’ School, and Queenstown Secondary School.
Being a mature district, which has undergone various stages of rejuvenation, it is no wonder District 03 is well developed with plenty of public facilities like community centres, markets, libraries, at least 3 polyclinics, and proximity to Alexandra hospital and Singapore General Hospital.
Food & Beverages (F&B) and Retail Options
Within the heartlands, affordable local fare is always found at food centres within the town centre. For District 03, this is the Alexandra Village Food Centre, Queensway Shopping Centre, Tiong Bahru Food Centre, ABC Market, Beo Crescent Market, and Mei Ling Street Food Centre amongst many others.
Prefer café food? There’s always the IKEA café, the stretch of popular hipster cafes and restaurants along Seng Poh Road, or neighbourhood joints like The Milky Way, Brew & Bites, or Colbar.
Easy Access to Downtown Core
Connected via the East-West line through 4 stations, Commonwealth, Queenstown, Redhill , and Tiong Bahru, District 03 offers quick and easy access into the Downtown core, a few MRT stops away.
